A good project needs a great architect. A brilliant project needs a great client! Villa Fano is the result of a shared vision in which we collaborated closely with the client to create a project that connects place, tradition, and the future.

Villa Fano is more than a home; it is an ecological statement, inspired by the climate of Nosy Be, Madagascar, and the local tradition of building.

Instead of importing Western products and materials such as air conditioning and aluminum window frames, we designed a building that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings. More than 85% of the materials used come from the island itself.

The design consists of an elevated platform supporting five separate structures, all united under a vast roof. The shape of the roof resembles the shell of a tortoise—an animal commonly found in the area. The association with nature, structural solidity, protection, and a sense of shelter is immediately evident.

During our first visit to the site, we spoke with local contractors and craftsmen about available materials and traditional building methods and local culture. This led to the discovery of a sacred tree on the property, around which we had to design the project. We also learned about the custom of having projects blessed by a shaman—a ritual we fully embraced in this project.

The house was designed without air conditioning or glass. Thanks to the unique shapes of the structures, the roof, and intelligent ventilation principles, the interior remains cool even in the tropical heat. The design makes us of the Bernoulli effect (the principle seen in asymmetric airplane wings), where pressure differences generate natural airflow. Custom-designed shutters provide shade and ventilation, eliminating the need for glass. Even mosquito nets became unnecessary due to the continuous airflow.

Villa Fano is completely self-sufficient: independent of the power grid, water supply, and sewage system. Built with local materials and indigenous construction techniques, it embodies the ecological and sustainable ideas we have developed over the past 25 years. This project is not just a house; it is a tribute to nature and a building tradition refined over centuries.
