Hofplein 19 in Rotterdam once housed the iconic Shell headquarters, but it now has a new purpose: an ecosystem for socially responsible scale-ups and an incubator for innovation.

CONCRETE EVERYWHERE

The concrete structure was originally designed with endless corridors and office units on either side in mind. Our design is completely detached from this original structure. The interior is now structured like a city: large squares for collective gatherings and narrow alleys where one can retreat and focus. We aimed to create a dynamic and flexible space that fosters collaboration and cross-pollination. The office units are equipped with massive 5-meter wide sliding doors, which, when open, connect the different spaces and enhance the spatial experience.

To connect the two floors, we designed a large staircase that also serves as a tribune. This central focal point of the space is illuminated by a crystal artwork, created in collaboration with artist Clifton Mahangoe and gallery owner Lousanne Schep (Chez Freddy), which draws visitors upwards.

In addition to the workspaces, a large work café was designed, a place where surprising encounters and new ideas come to the forefront. We also incorporated a large library for depth and focus, and a yoga studio to bring balance to the work rhythm. Local involvement was central to this project, including a caterer who provides sustainable and healthy food, supporting the well-being of the residents and visitors.

Hofplein 19 is not just an office. It is a flexible and inspiring place where innovation and collaboration take center stage.
