A Magnum photographer, Bruce Davidson is known for his compelling and humanistic photography. For decades, he has documented America’s social and political realities, often focusing on marginalized communities. His raw and intimate work gives a voice to people who would otherwise remain invisible.

International Collaboration

The exhibition Bruce Davidson | American Photographer was a collaboration with Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid and was curated by Carlos Gollonet (MAPFRE) and Frits Gierstberg (Nederlands Fotomuseum). For this exhibition, I created a spatial experience that honored the intensity and complexity of Davidson’s images.

The scenography enhanced the thematic depth of his work, guiding visitors through different periods of his career, from his early street photography to his immersive documentary series. The design played with contrasts – from suffocating and intimate to open and spacious – allowing Davidson’s photography to truly resonate.

A deliberate choice in the design was placing large blow-ups along the street-facing side of the museum. This kept direct sunlight out and protected the delicate vintage prints from fading. At the same time, this design decision left the windows unobstructed, creating an additional exhibition space that invited passersby to discover Davidson’s work.

With thoughtful material selections and subtle lighting, we created an atmosphere that deepened the stories told within Davidson’s photographs. The exhibition invited visitors not only to look but to step into the worlds of his subjects.

I’ve had the privilege of being an outsider allowed on the inside, searching for beauty, meaning and myself.
